The Joys of Owning a Saint Bernard
65The Best Dog for Your Family Might Be a Saint
The owner of a Saint Bernard gets asked often the question, “How big does the dog get?” Or sometimes they are asked, “Won’t he eat you out of house and home?” The answer to that question is that the dog will get extremely big, but no, chances are he will not eat you out of house and home.
A Saint Bernard eats no more than the average sized dog as his metabolism is slower than a lot of smaller breeds. He does exercise and loves to go for walks, but generally doesn’t exercise quite as much as other smaller dogs.
The saint has the most appealing physical features. He has a large, square face with soft, droopy jowls and a color that resembles a s’mores with graham cracker ears, dark chocolate mask surrounding the eyes and a nose and mouth made of melted marshmallow.
He is sweet in character and wants nothing better than to please his owner. He can be stubborn as most dogs are and even a bit hyperactive at first if not taken out on walks enough. There is also variation in mood. But it is safe to say that most saints have a good nature and wouldn’t harm anyone. They are known as “babysitters” as they are excellent with children.
If guided the right way, a saint can be a truly worthy companion for anyone as long as he is treated with love, patience and skill.
